REWINDING A MECHANICAL WATCH

When an automatic watch has not been worn for a long time, its power reserve (usually 42–48 hours, depending on the model) becomes depleted and the watch stops.

To start it again, unscrew the crown if the model has a screw-down crown, and manually wind the mechanism by turning the crown about 30–40 times. This will provide enough energy for the watch to operate normally.

Mechanical watches without an automatic module must be wound daily. Winding is complete when the crown can no longer be turned freely and light resistance is felt. It is very important not to overwind the crown, as this may damage the mainspring or other components of the movement.
